IPA Reviews

A craft using hops added primarily in the boil. Depending on when they are added in the boil will determine flavor and bitterness. This style results in a lower ABV. 5 to 7% (maybe a bit higher)

Foam (VT) Eternal Sunshine IPA 6.6%

  Brewed with Lemonzest

 Light lemon citrus aroma that will tease you in. Medium carbonation leads to a gentle lightly sweet lemon notes in a well done backbone supporting it. Bittering is minimal & provides balance. Each sip fades nicely, doesn't linger & finishes clean.

 Light, soft & mischievous. Colder was much preferred.

Hop Butcher (IL) Hoppy Days are here Again IPA 6.5%

SO MANY BEERS SO LITTLE TIME

  2 hops (Ekuanot & Simcoe)

Woody fruited aroma. Immediate bittering & higher carbonation begins the offering. Flavor initially is relegated to holding the sip & allowing it to blend. Observed are berry & multiple tropical notes. As we go further in a nice balance is noticed but bittering is the dominant factor.

Well crafted in allowing time for aspects to blend & soften the offering.

Weldwerks (CO) Goth Umbrella Black IPA 8%

  5 hops ( Citra, Columbus, El dorado, Lemondrop & Talus) 

 With a stouty aroma you enter into the offering 7 find bittering & malt flavors at the door. Present underneath are notes of multiple flavors that while initially muted keep forcing their way upward as the offering warms. From aroma to flavor they weave into the craft but never gain dominance as much as create balance. All aspects are presented in time as temp variates. Stout & IPA fans only.

 Earthy aroma with fruit aspects. Medium to high carbonation initiates the entrance to this offering. Flavors are blended into the above, those being orange & peach possibly tangerine. Body is soft & malts provide a backbone . Bittering is consistent throughout & circles around flavors creating balance in each sip.

 A balanced flavorful IPA.

Lightly earthed aroma with subtle fruit notes

 Flavor greets you with pineapple & orange in minimal carbonation & a light crisp body. Bittering lies below helping balance the bright full flavor aspects. Body promoted the entire sip which ends semi dry.

 A nicely crafted IPA with multiple aspects that play well together.

Slack Tide (NJ) Counter Current NEIPA 6.5%

Lupulin powder is used in this craft along with hops.

 Fruit & pine aroma jump out creating a loaded start. Carbonation is medium adding to the mix in a soft body that maintains all aspects start to finish. Flavors of apricot & peach are prominent in moderate bittering. All actors are in complete balance throughout.

A well crafted NEIPA offering all the contributions of this style that fans will enjoy.

Hop Butcher (IL) Sauvin IPA 7%

1 hop  (Nelson Sauvin)

 White wine aroma drifts from can providing grape aspects & flavor to come. clear wine like pour. Light carbonation & bittering to start. Holding the sip fills the senses with the hop qualities. crisp & clean start to finish from aroma to the semi dry ending.  

 If you enjoy a white wine aspect this will be a completely refreshing a craft as we've seen in a while utilizing this 1 hop.

Founders (MI) Red Sweater IPA 6.5%

 3 hops ( Chinook, Cascade & Centennial)

All are WC Hops.  Very neutral aroma Malts & light bittering greet you into a different style it seems. Sweet flavors flavors are invited into the blend further in & warmer enhances the same. Lightly resinous throughout regardless of temp but colder this was more of an influence in the craft.

 A nice weave of 2 styles closely related.  WC influenced but able to remain in the IPA camp

Tripping Animals/Ology (FL) Sun Juju DDH IPA 6.5%

SO MANY BEERS SO LITTLTE TIME

3 hops (Nelson Bliss, Peacharine & Simcoe

 Earthy aroma. Flavors rise right away in medium bittering & light spiced notes. Flavor remains dominant while mixing well. Grape is prominent when holding the sip with peach arriving late. All contributions balance at each sip end. Warmer creates a full body, colder created equal balance.

 Double & hazy camps will gravitate to this craft.

Zero Gravity (VT) Cone Head IPA 5.7%

1 hop (Citra)

 Crisp carbonation which fades into flavor & bittering. Flavor is lightly orange & becomes more dominant further in & remains the dominant aspect in a balanced setting. Backbone props up all the above.

 Pleasantly soft ending again mixes into bittering becoming equal partners in a light, crushable & refreshing craft. Colder was preferred

Zero Gravity (VT) Duck Duck Juice IPA 7%

 4 hops ( Mosaic, Talus, Cryo pop Mango & Krush)

 Light aroma a mixture of all hops. Higher carbonation & a semi soft body in medium bittering that ends each sip. Flavors blend into multiple aspects of peach, orange & melon with lemon nuances that pull forward through the above & take the offering to a refreshing level. As the offering warms this intensifies. Carbonation is a factor throughout the sip. 

 Softer & juicier than some IPAs. Most camps will enjoy.

Finback (NY) Marduk IPA 7.5%

3 Hops (Citra, El Dorado & Sultana)

 Fruited aroma. Full soft creamy backbone supports both flavors of berry, orange & peach & bittering which is an equal partner in the offering even though it backs off a bit towards each sip end. Carbonation was never a real contributing factor. 

 Each sip is as enjoyable as the previous. Colder was preferred. A true example of an IPA

Anchorage (AK) Heartfelt IPA 6.4%

SO MANY BEERS SO LITTLE TIME

  2 hops (Nelson & Mosaic) plus Phantasm

 Inviting aroma mix of orange & grape. Medium carbonation guides the flavor that matches aroma. Backbone vacillates between crisp & soft creating an interesting platform for flavors to blend. Bittering is minimal. Phantasm is the key to the soft layer of fruit flavor & balance between the white wine aspects of Nelson & mosaic orange. Ending is a nice blend of earthy Mosaic & dry Nelson. 

Well done IPA.

Dancing Gnome (PA) 62nd St IPA 6.6 %

 SO MANY BEERS SO LITTLE TIME

  3 hops (Rakua, Amarillo & Krush)

Fruited & lightly dry aroma. Medium carbonation & a semi soft body. Flavors of apricot, peach & subtle tropical come forward through on a platform of medium bittering & pine notes & offer some dominance & balance through the sip end. A nuanced spice notes is noticed.

 While flavors are prominent, this remains in the realm of an IPA but other camps could as well find it enjoyable.

Sierra Nevada (CA) Northern Hemisphere Harvest 6.7%

 SO MANY BEERS SO LITTLE TIME

 1 hop (Centennial) Utilizing wet hops

 Dank hoppy & toasted aroma with subtle sweet fragrance. Bittering is initial but gives way to a sweet note mid sip until sip ends with its return. Pattern is consistent  spotlighting a complete hop contribution. Blending of these 2 factors is achieved throughout though both aspects are always identifiable.

 By using wet hops this is the freshest you can get. WC & IPA fans will enjoy this offering.

Elder Pine (MD) Burning brighter than a Supernova IPA 6.7%

  2 hops (Nectaron & Citra)

Dry aroma that is grape nuanced. Higher carbonation & a crisp backbone. Flavors are layered in a drier base. Lemon & orange notes blend through the offering into grape that ends each sip. Holding the sip enhances flavor as does a warmer temp making the offering even more enjoyable. 

 A bit crisper than other offerings but the citrus aspects offer a refreshing change.

Vitamin Sea (MA) Backstage Pass IPA 6%

 SO MANY BEERS SO LITTLE TIME

 No hop info.

Lightly dank tropical aroma. Higher carbonation & a soft body introduce white wine flavor aspects that blend into mild bittering & tropical/citrus notes. All mix well & retain their identities throughout the sip. Carbonation recedes further in as a nice balance becomes the dominant feature.

 Offering is tropical in nature overall & well crafted for those fans as well as other style camps.

Dock Street (PA) Golden IPA 6%

4 hops ( Mosaic, Citra, Simcoe & Amarillo)

 Very light dank aroma with floral undertones.  Medium carbonation making for a crisp start. Golden may be the correct description for the blending which is bright and equally distributed in all hops flavors. No one hop overwhelms any other. Using all hops in the boil process only provides an earthy layer that adds to the taste & backbone and propels fruit notes forward.  Ends lightly tart.  A bit different for an IPA & worth a try.

New Trail/Bale Fresh hop IPA 6.7%

  3 hops (Simcoe, Cryo Mosaic & Mosaic)  Fresh wet hops 

 Fresh hop aroma. Flavor & bittering are an immediate blend which is the essence of this craft. Utilizing Munich & pilsner malts creates a crisp body & medium carbonation while remaining masked but still a noticeable contribution.

Bittering & flavor are well blended with no overriding aspect.

 A big difference in style (using wet hops)  for this brewer in creating a different well done craft. Colder was preferred

Dancing Gnome (PA) Track Botanical IPA 7%

  6 hops (Centennial, Chinook, Citra, Amarillo, Columbus & Mosaic)

Dominant  fruit aroma with bittered layers. Light body & carbonation. Flavor is dominant orange & citrus but allows the WC hops to provide the proper balance & contributions for bittering. Oats factor into the craft by keeping all aspects soft. A lightly dry layer permeates throughout but never interferes.

 A 6 hop craft is complex & hard to balance but when achieved is a thing of beauty.

Vitamin Sea (MA) Atlantic Sunset IPA 6.3%

 2 hops (Citra & Pacific Sunrise)

  Tropical fruit aroma. Medium carbonation & a soft body help citrus & tropical flavors begin immediately.  Both vie for dominance but Pacific Sunrise wins out with tropical flavor being dominant. A note of spice at each sip end creates a bit more balance.

 With very little bittering this could be considered a hazy IPA as well with nuanced NEIPA influences making it a craft for multiple camps.

Tonewood (NJ) Fuego IPA DDH 6.2%

  4 hops (Simcoe, Citra, Mosaic & Chinook)  (All are used in WC style IPA's )

 Multiple citrus aromas. Nicely carbonated beginning with nuanced grapefruit notes. Soft, full body & light bittering.  Citrus flavors from Citra & Mosaic make their presence felt with oat malt keeping the entire offering honest. Each sip gets you ready for the next & the 6.2 ABV makes this a 2 bagger in your session. Subtle bittering tickles each sip end. DDHing enhances flavors & keeps this in the realm of an IPA

Fast Fashion (WA) Hot Pizza 7.2%

 3 hops ( Freestyle Motueka, Cascade & Anchovy)

 Woody Motueka aroma. Extremely soft body & light carbonation. Highly tropical in flavor with light spiced notes & a woody bottom. As you venture further in the hops blend & balance.

 While no one aspect creates a signature in this offering hazy fans will find a creative new offering.

 As cold as possible provides full benefit of hop contributions.

 2 hops (Citra & Peacharine)

 3 sip rule ...

 Thick fruit aroma. Light dry start with light to medium bittering in a somewhat tart but soft body. Flavors are elusive until "sip 3" when the clouds part & reveal peach & orange that remain in the blend going forward. Sip ends with a spice nuance.

 Offering remains lightly dry throughout but never enough to overwhelm the essence of this craft. 

NEIPA, DIPA 7 IPA camps will want to try. Nicely done.

KC BC (NY) Werewolves of Wall ST DDH IPA 7.2%

SO MANY BEERS SO LITTLE TIME

  2 hops ( Citra & Motueka)

 Mixed fruit & woody herbal aroma compliments of both hops.

 Soft body & light carbonation opens the door to citrus orange & the same herbal notes with flavor being forward throughout. Motueka provides the balance with Medium Bittering never overwhelming flavor which floats to the top on every sip. Lightly tart with a soft "holding the sip" ending.

All camps may want to try this craft.

  1 hop (Citra)

 Citrus & grassy aroma. Light carbonation. Body wraps around citrus & tropical flavor. A grassy lemon nuance floats through each sip along the edges. Peach notes appear as well all the multiple flavor notes combine at sip end.  Each sip repeats the same influences with nice balance. Entire craft is light in nature.

Offering showcases the varying contributions of this hop with no one dominant.

Lucky Cat (PA) Residue of Design IPA 6.5%

 No hop info

 Lightly dank fruit aroma.  Light carbonation. Body creates an environment for flavor to become the forward aspect after an initial bitter start. Berry is the dominant flavor contribution with subtle apricot notes mixed in.  A light spiced ending for good measure adds to the offering. 

 A bit assertive at times but not enough to become a primary factor.

 An IPA with a muted West Coast influence.

    3 hops ( Galaxy, Simcoe & Citra)

 Immediate flavor forward aroma. Higher carbonation & a soft backbone begin the offering. Flavors burst out when holding the sip. Orange, peach & pineapple mix perfectly into the beginning aspects & mellow the craft. Bittering, while consistently noticeable surrenders to flavor.

 Well balanced craft & crushable at 6.6%

Three's (MA) Temporary Identity IPA 6.8%

    1 hop (Mosaic)

 Multiple fruit aroma aspects.

 Flavor follows aroma exactly in a lightly crisp but mostly soft body. Holding the sip highlights the nuanced blending of tropical, peach & citrus flavors. Bittering is a bottom layer & keeps needed balance.

 All aspects are light & enjoyable & because of that almost all camps will want to try this offering.

    2 hops ( Citra & Mosaic)

3 sip rule ...

 Dank aroma of fruit. Very hop forward. Carbonated & bitter to start (3 sip rule) Crisp WC body begins to bring forward  Citra flavors that mix into what is becoming an earthy base. All hops were used in the boil helping aspects balance further in. 

 Feels like a west coast which is a distant cousin of an IPA but it's a true IPA. Either camp will enjoy this deep, dank craft

Aslin (VA) Champion of the Sun IPA 6.5%

  3 hops ( Citra, Waimea & Vic Secret)

 Fruited tropical aroma. Medium carbonation. A soft body helps whole fruited flavor remain pungent. Tropical & Citrus sculpt the offering in the same direction with a light pine bittering at the end of each sip..

 All hops contribute to a more tropical flavor. Balance is present but flavor continually dominates. 

Colder may be preferred.

KC BC (NY) Aquaham DDH Hazy IPA 7.7%

  4 Hops (Citra, Nelson, Galaxy & Vista)

Aroma is a mixture of hops contributions.  An herbal beginning somewhat tart.  Body helps soften this into flavor aspects of orange, grape & peach that float through each sip dominating the offering going forward.  Vista provides the balance with an herbal tea notes behind the above. 

 Well done blend of all hops

Dewey (DE) Posted on the Coast IPA 8%

3 Hops (Rakua, Motueka & Newzilla )

 Dominant & bright aroma backed up by an herbal essence. Pillow soft body, light carbonation plunges you into a burst of multiple fruit flavors tropical, orange & berry in nature. Mixing into this tapestry are woody, herbal notes that are balanced & remain in the backround of the offering. Each sip ends with a light pleasant  spiced nuance.

 Higher ABV than most IPA's. This craft will appeal to multiple camps.

Drekker (ND) The H is Silent IPA 6.9%

 4 hops (Nelson, Nelson Cryo, Superdelic & Rakua)

 Nelson influences aroma with a woody Rakua note. As well, Nelson gives us a white wine flavor beginning slightly dry & weaves into full flavor notes of grape & berry ending back into initial impressions & an herbal aspect. A soft body & light carbonation gives hops the freedom to control the offering. Bittering is provided as a balance.

 A nicely crafted IPA for most camps.

Singlecut (NY) Psychedelic DDH'd IPA 7.7%

SO MANY BEERS SO LITTLE TIME

 Brewed with New Zealand hops.

Mildly fruited aroma with a hint of herbal notes. Multiple tropical flavors interact in light carbonation & a soft body. While no particular flavor is dominant it's a nicely done mix. A black pepper / tea aspect peeks out & tickles the senses at each sip end.

 Savoring each sip helps enhance the blending of all aspects. A bit warmer will promote flavors.

 A craft offered for those looking for tropical flavors.

KC BC (NY) Paws DDH'd IPA 7.2%

   3 Hops (Citra, Alora, & Motueka)

 Woody, fruited aroma. Medium carbonation & a soft body invites flavors of peach & orange to begin the offering. Mixing with the herbal woody contributions of Motueka that keep the offering honest flavors still are the main contributors compliments of DDH'ing which keep myrcene oils from evaporating & retaining flavor over bittering A craft for IPA,DIPA & Hazy fans

Rising Tide (ME) Maine Island Trail IPA

SO MANY BEERS SO LITTLE TIME

  Kettle & DH'd with 3 hops (Calypso, Citra & Simcoe)

 Neutral aroma. Bittering is immediate & medium. Introduction to flavors of citrus orange & grapefruit come into play & work forward somewhat taking over the offering but provide more to balance. Body is crisp, carbonation medium. No dominance of any aspect appears. 

 a 4.2% crushable session for fans of IPA's

  4 hops (Krush, Mosaic, Simcoe & Simcoe Cryo)

 Fruit aroma. While it seems like this will be heavy in nature it's deceiving. Wheat & oats keep the body soft & lightly sweet. Medium carbonation introduces you to a multitude of flavors blended just right with no one dominating.  50 IBU poses just enough bittering to achieve balance.

Eredita (CT) Hoot IPA 6.2%

  2 hops (Citra & Riwaka)

 Fruit aroma with woody notes.  Higher carbonation with immediate bittering.  Cold, flavor notes of Citra orange begin to blend but remain a backround contributor until the offering warms. Influences of Riwaka never truly surrender.  The higher IBU makes this an IPA all the way.

 Tropical & hazy fans will want to look elsewhere.

Nepanthe (MD) Fastball Special IPA 5.8%

 6 hops ( Chinook, Simcoe, Centennial & Columbus)  DDH'd with (Simcoe, Mosaic, Comet & Centennial)

Earthy fruit aroma. Many hop influences are at play 4 being primary WC But flavor is key in this craft. Orange & light grapefruit give this the flavor  to carry the ball. Bittering is the underlayer throughout. 

 DDH mutes any major bittering aspect of the WC hops more so flavor is enhanced. Warmer makes all contributions mix into a well done IPA blend.

Foam (VT) The Nameless IPA 7%

Multiple fruit aromas. Medium carbonation & just the right amount of bittering to avoid a juice bomb. A soft body buoys up the hop contributions. Nameless may be a good choice as hop info is hard to come by. A flavorful IPA with multiple tasting aspects & not heavy so 2 may do.

Vitamin Sea (MA) Four the Shore 6.17%

 4 hops (Citra, Citiva, Simcoe & Nectaron)

  3 sip rule  ...

 Tropical fruit aroma. Soft body & light carbonation with initial bittering. Lightly tart until sip 3 when flavor contributions kick in to produce peach, orange & tropical notes.

 A nuance of coconut towards each end sip refreshes & dissipates as quickly as it appeared.

  All aspects blend well & work well a bit colder.

 This craft also leans into the realm of NEIPA & hazy offerings making it a choice there as well.

Hop Butcher (IL) Cooler by the Lakefront IPA 7%

   2 hops  (Krush & HBC 1019)

 Floral aroma. Light carbonation & backbone.  Initial bittering quickly fades (or blends) into flavors of citrus & tropical that roll over top of the above. These layers create a more floral & flavored IPA as more flavor notes are provided. A lightly dry finish. Colder was preferred but warmer gives this offering a chance to bring hazy fans into this camp with the persuasive flavor

Tonewood (NJ) Hemispheres IPA 6.5%

   2 Hops  (Simcoe & Motueka)

 A fruit aroma not always associated with these 2 hops. Medium carbonation & a light backbone help soft flavors of citrus & pineapple permeate the offering. Ends in a semi dry finish. 

 This feels like a malt influenced craft & the Motueka flavor notes make for a well balanced offering.  Colder was preferred.

Mast Landing (ME) Factory Fiction IPA 6.5%

 3 Hops (Mosaic, HBC630 & Chinook)

 HBC 630 Imparts multiple fruit flavors greatly enhancing  that aspect.

 A Mosaic earthy HBC 630 fruit aroma . The soft body & light carbonation creates a platform for all involved flavors those being orange & a complex array of peach, cherry & berry. Bittering weaves through each sip balancing out the offering.

 Interestingly all temps create a different view of this craft each unique  & honest.

Nepenthe (MD) Grimoire IPA 6.1%

 3 hops (Citra, Citra cryo, Krush, Krush Lupomax & Pink)

 Earthier dry aroma possibly from Pink Boots.  Balance is right from the start. Bittering & flavor blend together.  Flavors range from orange to multiple citrus  compliments of the cryo & lupomax additions & float in the backbone with light carbonation. Herbal & light spiced notes make an appearance late.  Colder was preferred. A bit hazy but an IPA in all aspects.

Dancing Gnome (PA) Art Deco IPA

SO MANY BEERS SO LITTLE TIME

  2 hops (Citra & Triumph)

 Triumph is a dual use hop imparting citrus & herbal aspects when used early in the boil.

 Tart citrus aroma mixed with light carbonation. Orange dominant flavor mixes with nuanced bittering in mid sip & ends where it began wrapped in a soft body.  A subtle herbal ending completes the balance to this craft.  Warmer enhanced all the above.

Vitamin Sea (MA) Squared Circle IPA 6.8%

  1 hop (nectaron)

 Multiple fruit aromas draw you into this Nectaron only IPA Introducing you to flavors of peach, pineapple and tropical notes.  A soft body, light carbonation & a light bitterness let the former shine start to finish. Holding the sip enhances the flavor aspects.  The layering underneath of bittering props up the flavor making this an enjoyable balanced offering 

Evil Twin/Trillium Corner of George St & Shawmut Rd 7.2%

       2 hops (Columbus & Citra) 

                 3 sip rule please

 Dank fruit aroma which may be the influence of Columbus. This doesn't indicate what's to come. 

 Columbus imparts its earthy bittering notes that then mix with the citrus & orange flavors of Citra. Holding the sip flavors shine & dominate after sip 3. Medium carbonation & though hazy the offering is somewhat crisp.

 The blend & balance is clean & will be welcomed by WC & IPA camps

First State (DE) Hex Theory 6%

8 hops ( Strata, Citra, Amarillo, Trident, Simcoe, Centennial, Warrior and Apollo)

 Grapefruit aroma neutral in nature. Mixed flavors appear when warmer and blend into the IBU which is on the higher side. A note of spearmint appears into  this complex weave of hops..

 So many hops produce to many aspects to go into. It's enough to say this craft blends flavor and bittering and balances all to an end that is satisfying. Many of these hops are used in WC style but this craft maintains its IPA values
